Sociology 2500

Salt Lake Community College:

Instructor: Dwight Adams, MS
email: dwightladams@msn.com

Required Text: Social Psychology, Fourth Edition, by Stephen L. Franzoi, McGraw Hill.

Objectives:
Many students have studied psychology or social work, so they understand discussions about the individual. Many students have studied sociology or history, so they understand discussions about the society. But there is often a lack of understanding of the "bridge" that extends between the individual and the larger society (of a nation or of the entire world). This leaves many students with a feeling that the individual seems not to be "connected" with the society he/she lives in (after all, what can one ordinary person really do to impact it?).
That is the domain of social psychology which will now be treated in this course.

The goal is to help you better understand how, from individuals to small groups to larger and yet larger groups to the whole of society, certain predictable characteristics of the human species allows an interaction between and among all levels.

This course is designed as an introduction to the scientific study of social psychology. We learn SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY to measure our subjects. This class is NOT based on opinions, beliefs, or snap conclusions. We try to measure the human interactions objectively.

Learning Opportunities:
1) Please read the textbook assignments prior to class. Class time should go beyond the text.
2) Exams will be made up from both the class and the text; class attendance is required and will be noted.
3) Outside study and work will be needed. Weekly homework assignments may be required.
4) Web sites will be used for the study helps and exams

Missing Classes and Participation:
Due to illness or bad weather, I give you a "grace period" of 8 clock hours missing class. After that, your final grade will be impacted. Participation in discussions is also expected. Talking to friends in class or on phones will hurt your grade. Please have phones turned OFF in class.

Your weekly Homework will be due on Friday each week by 5 pm (see the right hand column).

Other learning opportunities will include assignments that look for practical applications of what we have recently been studying.

----------------------------------------

Students interested in earning an "A" should do something extra. If you do the Extra Credit Project, it will be due in class during the last week of class. You may be asked to give the class a brief overview of your project. The Extra Credit Project will be designed by you and your instructor to cover an area of your personal interest.  If you plan on doing this, you should contact your instructor concerning your interests after the beginning of February.

----------------------------------------

Schedule for the Semester
We will read and study about 1 chapter per week (there are 14 total chapters)
     MIDTERM #1 (Chapters 1-3)
     MIDTERM #2 (Chapters 4-7)
     MIDTERM #3 (Chapters 8-11)
FINAL (Chapters 12-14) as scheduled by the college; it is held in the  same class room

Grading:
SEE "Expectations" for full details
Your final grade consists of attendance & participation, exams and your home work. The extra credit project should be done if you feel the need for extra credit. Talk with me about the subject you wish to pursue in the project before you begin it. The amount of extra credit will be determined based upon the quantity and quality of your work.

For grading purposes, the lowest of the first three tests (the midterms) will be dropped. The final is required to pass the course and will not be dropped.  Each of the 3 tests will be about 22% of your final grade, the homework another 22% and the rest is attendance and participation.

Special Needs:
Students with disabilities needing accommodations such as: special test arrangements, note taking, taped textbooks, tutoring, equipment, etc., please contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) in the College Center Room 230; 975-4659 (voice) or 975-4646 (TTY).

Understanding yourself

You have a weekly assignment (to be received by me no later than 5 pm each Friday) for each chapter of your textbook. You are to do 1 chapter each week; the assignment for that chapter is due on Friday of the same week. (example: week 3 we do chapter 3 and by Friday of that same week the assignment #3 is due --send it by email to me).

SPECIAL NOTE: YOU MAY SEND ASSIGNMENTS IN EARLY- BUT NOT LATE. I MUST RECEIVE YOUR EMAIL NO LATER THAN 5 pm OR I will only give you 1/2 credit. The following will help you in learning to access the assignments---

To Access the Textbook Website (where your weekly assignments are), do the following:

1- go on the internet to: http://www.mhhe.com/franzoi4

2- Choose "student edition" on that page
3- Choose the chapter to work on

3- click on "multiple choice"

4- take the 15 question multiple choice test. You may use your textbook and you should do pretty well. When you are done:

5- You click on "submit answers".

6- You now have a screen that reports your grade and helps you see the correct answers for the 15 multilple choice questions. You can now submit the grade via email using this same system:

SPECIAL NOTE: YOU MUST PUT DOWN YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS! You will NOT get credit if you do not put a correct email address! EVERY STUDENT AT THE COLLEGE HAS AN EMAIL ADDRESS THROUGH THE COLLEGE (but you can use another one, if you perfer).

7- This screen will show a box that you can fill in to submit the report. Place needed information in: 1- Your Name, 2- Section 1.
Then Your email address and MY email address: dwightladams@msn.com
8- when you finish, click the button underneath and send the report of your grade automatically to yourself (as a copy) and to me (for recording of your grade).

DO NOT SEND YOUR ASSIGNMENTS AS "ATTACHMENTS!" I WILL NOT ACCEPT AND WILL NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS!!! USE THE SYSTEM AS INTENDED BY FOLLOWING THE STEPS ABOVE

---------------------------------------------
NOTE: At the end of every semester, nearly all students think that they should be given an "A." This is not reasonable. You are in competition with other class members.
