The Davis County, Utah, Aging Network

Part II. Private Programs and Organizations for the Older Population

       A. Local Organizations and Companies Which May Affect Davis County Elders

The method used in this paper to find private sector members of the aging network for Davis County was to glean from the local phone book, the Davis County Directory, advertisers who mention older adults or elderly in their names or in their ad copy. The listing that resulted from that research is found in the Appendix Part II at the end of this paper.

Not all of the listings are from the private sector, as some public sector groups made attempts to advertise to the Davis County residents, and most of the medical, dental, and other health providers are not listed due to the shear volume of the space they would take. However, the listing does show two important things:

1- The local private sector is interested in providing goods and services to the older adults of Davis County.

2- Those same providers are in strong competition with the counties of Weber and, especially, of Salt Lake County where the State Capitol and other important public organizations reside.

      B. State Organizations and Companies Which May Affect Davis County Elders

Due to the close proximity to Davis County of Salt Lake County and the State Capitol, the “metropolitan” phone directory includes all of Salt Lake County and the southern portion of Davis County. The northern part of Davis County is also found in the Weber County phone book. The older adults of Davis County, no matter where they live in the county, are constantly bombarded with TV ads, newspaper ads, junk mail, and even the influence of metropolitan phone books that draw them out of Davis County to buy goods and services in the larger cities. Occasionally the local Chamber of Commerce will sponsor “buy at home – keep our money in Davis County” events. But the draw to go to the larger cities with more variety is strong. Those elderly who no longer drive and find it hard to use public transportation may be limited to shopping close to home in Davis County.
